for

HUDSONVILLE
SCHOOL BOARD

Thank You!

‍I am humbled by the results of the election. Thank you for trusting me to represent you. Thank you also for the time and financial support you have given along with encouraging texts and messages when I needed them most.

I have loved HPS from the moment my youngest child walked into Young 5s and I entrusted him into the capable hands of Mrs. Smith. I have been clear about my values during the campaign, and I can assure you that I will work to protect childhood innocence, prioritize all students, support teachers, safeguard parental rights, and set high standards for the superintendent.

I am grateful to my husband who has been my biggest supporter and encourager and to my kids who said, “As long as you’re running to make Hudsonville better, we’re good with it.”

It has been a privilege to get to know Dana O’Dell throughout this process. I am sad that the community has missed out on the opportunity to have him on the board, but I am so grateful for his wisdom and support. I greatly respect his dedication to HPS and to what is best for the children of the district.

I look forward to working collaboratively with all board members (congratulations to Andrew DeWitt) and the superintendent. There’s lots to be done, and I can’t wait to get started. Please reach out to me. I am committed to working to keep Hudsonville an excellent school district where children receive an outstanding education from top-tier educators.

About Joy

Photo of Joy Hemmes

Joy was born in Nassau, Bahamas, to a Bahamian mother and a Canadian father. She grew up there as a dual national and has fond memories of her childhood experience. Joy attended Wheaton College in Illinois and graduated with a B.A. in Modern Languages, spending her junior year in Spain.

After college, she volunteered for two years at a residential program for young adults battling addiction. She continued her education in Toronto, Canada, earning a Teaching English as a Second Language certificate. She then graduated from Boston University with a Master of Arts in Teaching in Modern Foreign Languages (Spanish). Teaching took her to some unique places, including a public school in the U.S. and a Christian international school in Seoul, Korea.

While pursuing a Diploma of Christian Studies at Regent in Vancouver, Canada, Joy met her husband Nate, a West Michigan native. They moved to Hudsonville, drawn by the small-town feel and the solidly grounded education experience free from outside influences. Afterward, Joy became a U.S. citizen, worked as a paraprofessional at Forest Grove Elementary, subbed in the district, and is now a communications assistant at the church her family attends.

Joy is actively involved in her children's education. She has served as an elementary class parent and a middle school Science Olympiad coach. She is an avid fan and supporter of water polo and swimming. Joy has been a member of the Diversity and Advocacy Committee (DAC) since its formation in January 2022. She was selected to represent and be a voice for parents and community members who do not support Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI). Joy believes it brings increased division and is working to pursue other ways to address issues of harassment and bullying in HPS on an individual level.

Joy's time on the DAC, attendance at board meetings, and review of meeting recordings have increased her awareness of the school board's importance and its role in the district. Joy has often engaged with the board and the superintendent on various issues and concerns. If elected, she aims to protect childhood innocence, keep academics neutral, and be an engaged, well-informed, and collaborative board member. Joy is driven by a desire to understand and research data to make informed decisions. She is confident that her unique life experiences, passion for education, strong work ethic, and lifelong desire to learn will set her up to be a successful board member.

Issues

Prioritize All Students

Every student is unique and deserving of a quality education in a safe environment and attuned to individual needs

Respect the Rights of Parents

Parents and guardians have the right to direct the care, teaching and education of their children. They need the school board to be their advocates.

Support Teachers

Great teachers are the backbone of a successful school district. They should have the right tools to excel as well as an open door to work with the school board.

Protect Childhood Innocence

Kids grow up fast enough as it is. Extra care needs to be given to ensuring they are not exposed to things that aren't age appropriate or against a parent's wishes.

Encourage Academic Excellence

The focus should be on students learning the fundamentals of core subjects and exceeding district and state standards while also meeting the individual learning needs of each student.

Set High Standards for the Superintendent

The school board needs to determine clear and measurable goals for the superintendent to meet. These should align with parent and community concerns and help propel the district forward.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are you running for the Board of Education?

Over the years, as a parent and paraprofessional in the district, I have attended board of education meetings, engaged with the board and the superintendent on various issues and concerns, and participated on the DAC. I was encouraged by respected community members to consider running for a position. I realized that to make a difference, I must be willing to serve. When the board and the superintendent understand their roles and responsibilities and work together to execute the vision they have set for the district, the district will be healthy and successful. I want to hold the superintendent and board to a high standard and help set policies that will benefit the students in our district in a way that increases transparency and builds trust.

What particular experiences or skills have prepared you to serve as a board member?

I have a background in education, with a B.A. in Modern Languages from Wheaton, IL, and a Master of Arts in Teaching from Boston University. I was privileged to teach in various schools and, more recently, work for two years as a paraprofessional at HPS. These experiences have given me valuable insights into the perspectives of both staff and teachers. One of my key strengths is my ability to listen and collaborate effectively. My time on the DAC has helped me to further develop these skills, allowing me to voice concerns and approach complex issues with logic and reason. I will bring this same spirit of collaboration and intellectual curiosity to the board of education, ensuring that I understand the big picture and the concerns of the stakeholders.

What do you see as the primary work of the board of education?

The board hires and evaluates the superintendent, sets policy, and ensures the quality of education in Hudsonville Public Schools is excellent. I am deeply interested in seeing the focus remain on the high quality of education rather than other issues we often see being pushed front and center. I am also committed to working collaboratively on the board, remembering that the community elects board members to represent their voice.

What experiences do you have with local government?

While enthusiastically voting in elections for local government, I have not engaged in other forms of involvement until now. I have served on the Diversity and Advocacy Committee (DAC) for 2 ½ years. I was selected to represent the voices of parents and community members who do not support Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI). I see it bringing increased division, and I believe the district should address issues individually rather than using a “one size fits all” approach. Through my attendance at board meetings, I have gained insights into how the board conducts business. I would be honored to be elected as a board member and serve the community in this capacity.

In what school district or community activities/organizations have you been involved?

As a parent, I take a special interest in my children's education. I have been a class parent, paraprofessional, and substitute at the elementary level. I also served as a middle school Science Olympiad coach for two years and have been on the DAC for 2 ½ years. I actively participate in the sports events that my boys are involved in. Additionally, I am an active member of our church, where I write curriculum, teach elementary-aged students, work with youth, and help with the financial needs of others as a member of the Compassionate Care committee.
